Fort Barchon is one of the twelve forts built in the late nineteenth century as part of the fortifications in Liège. Construction took place between 1881 and 1884 under the direction of General Henri Alexis Brialmont . Unlike the French forts built during the same period, the fort consists exclusively of unreinforced concrete rather than masonry. Concrete was a groundbreaking material at the time .
